For individual families I conduct Puppy Classes over Zoom video conferencing.
If that sounds like a bit of an odd thing to do, think of it this way – no animals in their natural habitat socialise with other families, and contrary to popular belief, going to a live puppy class in a hall in your town can be absolutely terrifying for a young puppy. It certainly was for Chili dog back in the day when I didn’t know. I am convinced it was one of the reasons why she didn’t trust me to make good decisions outside of the home in our early days together.
Traditional village hall puppy classes serve to meet an old myth about puppy socialisation – that there is a mythical time period, by 16 weeks of age, by when if your puppy hasn’t been physically faced with all of the challenges from a long check list of things, he will be ruined for life! I am delighted to tell you that this is not true. Far too many times I hear of frenzied puppies, who by the age of 6 months, are manic in their home and even worse outside because they have not been given the time it takes them to calmly experience and understand the world into which we have brought them.
For your pup, the most important thing is that he feels safe in his new home, with you and your family. That he understands you and also understands his role within the family. I believe that time is the most important thing we can give our pups. The time it takes for them to understand who you are, what their new environment is like, what is acceptable for them to do, what is not acceptable all depends on the individual and what’s going on around them. There is no one size fits all.
Once we build this foundation of trust, we can enjoy many beautiful experiences together at the pace the puppy can cope with.
During our 3 scheduled online meet ups, the pace of which is led by you, I will show you life through the eyes of your puppy and coach you to make yourselves really well understood by him so he gains trust and can relax with you. You will have many opportunities to ask me about your individual circumstances and your individual puppy. I will set you some clear homework each time and you have plenty of opportunity to feedback and ask all the questions you need. You can even ask the children in the family to work on something with their pup, video it, and send it to me for feedback and encouragement.
With beautiful collaborative trust between puppy and family, the world is your oyster. I look forward to hearing from you.
